Most Athletes Do Not Need to Replace Potassium

Many sports drinks advertise that they contain potassium, but potassium deficiency is not common in athletes unless they are trying to control weight by vomiting.

A few years ago, one of the best female long-distance runners in the country came to me to find a cause for her sudden drop in performance. All tests I ordered were normal except for a low blood level of potassium. The most common cause of potassium deficiency is vomiting, but she repeatedly denied doing this. I then requested that she collect her urine for one day, and the laboratory reported that it contained three times as much potassium as normal. This proved that she was bulimic. To control her weight, she was sticking her finger down her throat and making herself throw up. After she was able to accept the diagnosis, she got help, stopped vomiting and went on to win several long distance running titles.

The kidneys and sweat glands conserve potassium so effectively in response to low body levels that potassium deficiency rarely occurs in healthy athletes. Even with prolonged exercise in very hot weather, potassium needs can be met by eating a normal diet because potassium is found in virtually all foods except refined sugar. On the other hand, potassium deficiency can be caused by drugs, such as diuretics and corticosteroids. It can also be caused by diarrhea or repeated vomiting. With diarrhea, potassium is lost in the stool. With vomiting, potassium is lost in the urine. In both athletes and non-athletes, the most common cause of low potassium blood levels and high potassium urine levels is vomiting.

awful awful awful
this product looks as if its gonna fall apart anytime. One day I finished a work out and saw a nut lying below the chair. I gulped and have never used the chair again. Do not buy this product.

You'd better have strength and lots of space!
It works if you work it. Getting it together was sure torture for a woman. It's extremely hard to get out of a door, so you need to take part of it apart. It takes up a huge amount of space, so I'm selling it to a friend with a house. She'll like it, but man...getting it together is just brutal.

1 year later
My husband turned 50 last April and started using an ab lounger everyday faithfully he was at 210, 1 year later he is now 175 thinner than he was when we got married and this was the only change that he did, he really does no other exercise routine. He continues to do the ab lounger every am, he looks great and states his back is great. No sciatica pain since he started using the ab lounger. He could be a poster child.Ab Lounge 2 Ultimate Abdominal Machine

Ab Lounge is great
Light, compact, easy storage
what more can you say
one of the best Excersizers.

Spendy, but a Good Workout
I bought an ab lounge about a year ago, and I used it every day for a month, and that was all the time it took to get a 6 pack. It's very effective for ab exercises, and it helps to stretch your back at the same time and add flexibility(warning though, don't stretch as far as it'll go if you don't have a fairly flexible back). I'd say its a little much for a thing that only focuses on one body part, but it's much less expensive than those giant machines at the gym. And as a plus, it can also function as a chair when you have company and not enough seats. Just remember, you have to keep up on the exercises, as I lost my 6-pack after about 3 days when I took a break for a job search.

About Elliptical Trainers
Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.

Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.

Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.

Customer Reviews

Great when it works, awful when it's broken
I bought the Schwinn 430 8 months ago and found the assembly to be straight forward. I was very happy with the performance of the machine for the first two months, but started to have issues with squeaking from inside the flywheel assembly. These would typically start only after I had been on the machine for 20 minutes and get worse. The 90 day warranty for labor passed and the problems with noise from inside the front came and went. A few weeks ago the machine broke while I was on it - the resistance went away and didn't vary with changing the settings. I called Schwinn first thing the next morning and after being on hold for 10-15 minutes was given the option of leaving a call back number, so I did. The following morning I still hadn't gotten a call so I tried again. This time I got a person. I had registered the machine online, but was told they have no record of that registration and that the online registration often doesn't work. We spent time registering the machine, after which I described the issue. After some discussion I was told it was probably the motor and that one would be mailed out for me to use in repairing the machine. A week later I called back to find that they had never started the paperwork to ship the motor. I was assured they would ship the motor, but I should expect it to take another week to arrive. The motor finally arrived yesterday so I started to disassemble the machine last night. Guess what - its wasn't the motor that failed, it was the belt (which had clearly rubbed up against something which is why it had squeaked). Given my experience so far with Schwinn I'm guessing I'll see a belt in another couple of weeks. When the machine is working its excellent value for money, but the company is a huge pain in the neck to deal with when it's broken. I deeply regret not buying an extended labor warranty on this elliptical since I assume I would have just made one phone call to get things fixed. And I should have taken the unit apart to precisely diagnose the problem before calling Schwinn to avoid the delays due to their wrong assessment of the problem.

I love my elliptical trainer!
I love this machine. It gives me a good workout on days when I used to brave cold and wind and rain just to get some exercise in the city pool. It keeps me from feeling frantic when there's no surf and I can't get my ocean fix. It gives me a chance to watch TV, which I seldom find time to do otherwise. It brings in some of my favorite friends and relatives who also use it several times a week. It allows me to exercise even when I have various foot, knee or shoulder injuries. I enthusiastically recommend it.

Excellent Machine
The Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer is an excellent exercise machine. It is smooth, almost silent, and has enough options to make workouts interesting without being overly complicated. It took about two hours to assemble at a very leisurely pace. I found it easy to assemble after laying out all the parts, with fairly good instructions and well marked small parts being a plus. Its relatively small size and quiet operation make it a good choice for those with space constraints.

Schwinn 430 Elliptical
Got the 430 from Amazon because of best price and best reviews by other buyers.... ( Best ellipticals in this price range ) Instructions were fairly easy to follow and apply . Put it together in about 1 hour and tried it out. It worked well for a couple of days. My wife and I alternate days at about 30 minutes each. After about 2 days , the sqeaking that other reviewers complained about , began. I took the three points apart , that other users mentioned and applied white lithium grease. When I reassembled .... I didn't tighten the bolts as tight. Since then it has been quite with no problems. I would put the white lithium on it to start with and be easier on the bolt torque when assembling it .... if I had it to do over again.

I consider it a very good buy for the money other than the sqeak .... which I halfway expected , from the other reviews .... although I was willing to risk it because it was fixable and I as well as the others liked everything else about it once that is resolved.

Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer
This trainer was fairly easy to assemble though several parts were mislabeled left and right components cross labeled. The internal electric motor was defective. I notified Schwinn and they shipped me the parts required. Since this unit has a parts and labor warranty I called Schwinn to schedule the repair, after a two week wait I called again and was told that the northern California people would be in touch.Long story short I called Amazon and explained the problem and Amazon picked the unit up via truck and gave me a refund no hassle. Thank You Amazon!!
