With the recent news of fans throwing things at Barry Bonds, there has been more attention than ever on what the consequences should be for those who act out in that way. When it comes down to it, it seems that fans can get away with a lot, as long as they don’t get caught. When a fan threw a syringe at Bonds when he was playing at Petco Park, there was no one to punish, because no one was ever caught. However, there was an arrest when a fan threw a tube of cream at Bonds during the San Francisco and Arizona game.

Security is tighter than ever, but should it have to come down to that? The MLB coaches seem to agree that if a fan wants to shout their dislike or “boo” a player, it should be seen as acceptable behavior. However, they think that when things get potentially physical (throwing objects onto the field being included in this area), it should not be tolerated. Fans must abide by a set of rules for each field, and they are learning the hard way what the rules are. So, as a fan, know that any disgust for any player you want to display must only be done verbally. After all, apparently verbal outrage is safer in the eyes of the officials than is tossing something onto the field.
